Given at the All-School Meeting, 2005
The Magi Process adds the physical body to the work of ASOS. Or we might say that the body, becoming ready to work nondually in the world, arrives at the vehicle of Magi Process which rides the wave of the body into the waves of the world.
Working for the world always entails the body. 1. I want people to understand, as they work with the Magi Process, that they are not working with a magical system, but are tuning into a deep truth about how the universe works. I’m trying to open the space for us all in which the Magi Process can bloom and flourish.
2. One of the most powerful images in the Star Wars movies is of the master Jedi Yoda and his apprentices moving objects with their minds alone. For some reason, action-at-a-distance, movement without physical means has always intrigued us. Voodoo, the work of shamans, dream journeys, prayer itself, even the art forms of puppeteering, and the ghost plays of Japanese Noh drama, all of these are supposed to work the miracles of what Einstein called spooky action at a distance.

You begin the Magi Process by deciding upon a Theme.

A Theme is a statement of the problem you would like to work on.

The themes you are working with do not have to be nicely worded. They must be thought about and felt in the body.

Whether you think "your side" is in the right or not is also ok: you hold that possibility in your body along with all other possibilities.

So we hold it all.

Not so much in language but as in "idea," or "theme."

Not so much in "question" as in the body.

You are not trying to "figure it out," or come to an understanding that this is wrong or how to make it right, but rather illuminate and reveal the scope of the problem.

The shape of the dissonance is felt, fully in the sensorium.

Examples of some past themes that people have worked with are:

"The polarization of American politics"

"All the ways adults misuse children"

"Peace in the middle east"

From these examples, you can see that it does not matter what you feel the solution should be. Whatever your particular point of view or bias is, that is included too as part of the "shape," or "dissonance," that comprises the difficulty you are trying to help by using the Process.

Please click on the "Suggested Themes" button to see ideas for additional themes. These themes will be updated monthly.

1. First, the barrier of angry earth plane vectors

Comment:

When we hold the situation/shape/dissonance along with the desire for change, we will come up against the reluctance of the world to change; the very inertia and beyond that, the stubborn “no” that the material plane represents. This is not so much a psychological no, as a inherent tendency within this plane of existence.

Feeling this resistance in the sensorium brings us directly to 2nd step in the process

2. Admit to danger
when we take this confrontation with the actual conditions of the earth plane seriously. Admit to danger. It is not easy now nor has it ever been easy.

The Process continues:

3. Do not be afraid, but oak, big and deeply rooted.

Then the direction changes:
4. Remember the Mother and not only the Father.

What does this mean? There is nothing specific in the Process or comments that tell you how to think of the words “Mother” or “Father,” and yet, if you let yourself sink into them, the conditions/shapes/feelings around these words will become apparent.

You do not have to have specific or clear psychological thoughts: the Magi Process is not a psychological process, though it will bring up important psychological issues to think and talk about.

Do you have feelings for your own mother and father? Are they negative or positive? It does not matter. The Magi Process is not a traditional psychological process. All of this will come into play in its own way. You don’t have to “work it out!”

The Process continues. Sometimes it is a reminder; sometimes a description of where you have been or where you are going.

5. Do not make plans; do not let plans make you.

Here you think deeply and feel deeply, allowing the matter in hand to grow into its own in its own way, through its own twists and turns.

6. Listen to the Mother, who is around you.
7. Listen to the Father, who is within you.

…and on we go….

8. Listen to the language of sounds: beats, rhythms, drums, birds especially.

9. The world will respond and signal.
Comment:
In other words, the Magi Process
assures us that there is a very real conversation going on all the time…

10. Value war.

11. Don’t be too quick to make peace.

12. Go out from the center and in from the world.

13. Know there actually are machineries and mills working.

14. There are sunlit roads woven within the dark places.

15. Both are needed.

16. The first Gods to appear are the angry ones.

17. Pay attention: make Mother/Father your first appointment. Comment: Be here!
Doing the Magi Process

1. To begin the Magi Process, you must think broadly and think in the body.

2. The Magi Process is not a reasonable process any more than spring or summer, fall or winter are reasonable. Water rushing through a stream is not reasonable: instead the stream is about a series of pre-determined consequences (water loves to flow, things will be swept aside, sunlight will glint off the water….)and the chaos that arises with everything being indeterminate within the determinate system. Chaos within order; order within chaos. This is way beyond reason.

3. There is no reconciling or unification to be done: you do not need to “find both sides of the story” or problem you are working with; you do not need to reason things out.

4. Yet, some work needs to be done. We need to learn to be present to our own self and the situation we are working with in a certain way.

5. For example, the other day I was preparing to work on the fact that the Republican chairman of the federal corporation that funds the public broadcasting has begun interfering in the shows themselves and revealed that he had done a secret investigation into Bill Moyers’ show to prove how liberally biased it was, and then used the information he found to demand that more conservative shows be shown on PBS stations.

6. In order to do the Magi Process, one must bracket all of the details of the situation and hold them all in consciousness. For instance, in the example I cited above, I held the fight between the corporation for public broadcasting and the interests he represented; the president of PBS itself and his side. I also included my own feelings, to wit, that the chairman was a bully he wanted nothing better than to destroy the public broadcasting system, making it an arm of the government. And so on….

7. In other words, my work was to be aware of all of this dissonance, which I held as a single unit or shape or dissonance. I use these different words because people will react to them differently and usually one or two are most meaningful and descriptive for any given person.

8. Nothing needed to be “worked out.” I needed to be aware of the entire thing however.

9. If I had been working with an issue that was more directly personal to me, for which I had “hotter” or more intense personal feelings and beliefs, I still would have had to bracket all of it as the complete shape or dissonance it was. In other words, I would not have to deny my own feelings of being “in the right.” I would however, need to include them in my consciousness. This is very much like riding the wave of transference or the bracketing experiment described in the [The Set of the World].

(please go to A Society of Souls to order this and other works by Jason Shulman)

10. All of this, the various pieces, insights, conflicts, thoughts, annoyances, concerns, fear, anxiety, hope and so on, are held In the body. In a sense they have boiled down to a shape or body felt sense of the “whole” situation. Therefore, there is at that point a single location for the whole conflictæalong with the desire for change, the thought that “it should/could be different.”

11. Once the situation or dissonance or shape is held in consciousness along with the desire for change, one begins the Process.

12. The Magi Process is a series of statements and poetic utterances which, on the surface, have no particular order apparent by reading them. They seem deeply mysterious.

13. Yet, there is a deeply organic lineage of ideas going on. In fact, many people have reported that not only does the Process lead you to the next step, but it sometimes reports or describes where you already find yourself as you hold dissonance and desire for change together in your consciousness as you proceed with the process.

14.
